Wetlands

The wetlands provide a wonderful habitat for fresh-water turtles, snakes, fish, crustaceans and water rats as well as insects.

Saw-shelled Turtles on Rupert's Pond

We have identified 14 species of frogs but the dominant sound from the swamps at the onset of the wet season rains is the call of Litoria infrafrenata. Both Litoria xanthomera and Litoria gracilenta fill in any momentary lulls with their own noisy choruses.

Afternoon Bathing in the Wetland
Our wetlands become progressively drier during the later months of the year, and as the water gradually recedes the exposed mud attracts many birds. There are also some permanent water holes providing a variety of habitats. Bird Hide in February 2007

In September '04 we began the second major stage of wetland construction and already we have birds taking advantage of new fishing and frogging grounds. The extensive areas of shallow water are well vegetated along the edges with native sedge species and other native ground covers that help to create a balanced wetland habitat.
