Wild Wings & Swampy Things
Wild Wings & Swampy Things has now been formally declared a Nature Refuge. 85% of our 40ha property is included in our Conservation Agreement with Queensland Parks and Wildlife.
In twenty years this property has been transformed from cleared and marginally productive farming land into a productive eco-system inhabited by a large variety of both resident and migratory wildlife. We have a long frontage on Barratt Creek, a tributary of the Daintree River, with riverine Mangrove vegetation converging with Lowland Tropical Rainforest.
We are delighted to have the recognition of Nature Refuge as we know that our work to protect and enhance this habitat, which is part of the Daintree River Valley catchment, is now well protected.
This reinforces our ongoing commitment to conserving the natural values and improving those areas that were previously cleared. The restoration and regeneration of our landscape will continue to be a priority.
There are excellent bird watching opportunities throughout the various habitats represented on the property, however the diverse bird life is only a part of our story. We have now identified over 500 native plants and also take great delight in identifying and learning more about the reptiles, amphibians, mammals and of course our fabulous tropical butterflies and the wonderfully diverse insects that enjoy our extensive wetlands.
Our two-hour guided walk will give you a good introduction to the natural world in the wet tropics – please tell us if you have a particular interest.
This is not a physically demanding tour – we want you to relax and enjoy our beautiful environment and hope that you will find it a very rewarding experience.
